Diamond Gemstone

Diamond Gemstone

The diamond gemstone, is the most popular and preferred gemstone among all the precious gems, at least in the United States, and perhaps around the world. Though it is often thought that the diamond is the most valuable of all the gemstones this is not necessarily true. Rubies and emeralds of quality can often have more value.

When selecting a diamond it is important to evaluate before purchasing, based on what are called the 4 C's. Clarity, cut, carat weight, and color are the four important features of diamond gemstones that need your attention.

Important Diamond Features

The weight of a diamond can be expressed in either carats or in points. A carat is equal to 200 milligrams. A point is equal to 1/100th of a carat, which would make 20 points the same as 1/5th of a carat.

The preferred color of a diamond gemstone, other than fancy diamonds, is colorless. A colorless diamond is the most highly rated.

Clarity refers to transparency and the lack of flaws. Most diamond gemstones contain flaws. Many may not be visible without magnification. A flawless diamond would be very valuable.

The fourth feature is the cut of the diamond. Cut and shape should not be confused. They mean two different things. A diamond that is skillfully cut will display more brilliance and reflect more light.

Diamond Shapes

Diamonds come in a variety of shapes. Round is the most popular, but there are oval, heart shaped, pear and other shapes. Shape does not necessarily influence the value of a diamond. How diamond are placed in a setting is important as well. The placement in these floral design diamond earrings icon are a refreshing break from the standard diamond stud earrings.

The April birthstone

The diamond gemstone is the April birthstone. In ancient times diamonds were associated with fire or lightning. In the middle ages rings set with precious stones including diamond gemstones were not considered jewelry so much as they were a talisman or charm, to bestow good fortune or special power to the wearer.

In more modern times, the diamond has become a symbol of love and matrimony. A diamond is the most frequently chosen of the gemstones for engagement rings and also wedding sets.
Diamonds are fine gemstones and can be worn for a number of occasions aside from wedding and engagement rings. This diamond and pink sapphire pendant icon is a lovely and very dainty piece of jewelry that is classic and can be worn for many special occasions.
Diamonds are the hardest mineral on earth. When a diamond is not being worn, it should not be stored with other jewelry items without first being wrapped in soft cloth or tissue as it can easily damage the other jewelry items by scratching.

When purchasing a diamond, it is wise to get one that is accompanied with a diamond certificate. This certificate should be provided by an independent source. Two sources that are very respected are the American Gemological Society and Gemological Institute of America.
